Rich Marriott Biography
Rich Marriott is a senior American meteorologist currently working for KING 5 Mornings. Marriott has 43 years of experience in weather forecasting and has been part of KING 5 for the last 31 years. However, he earlier worked for NWAC for 15 years, serving 12 years as a forest service meteorologist in Seattle.
As for his education, Rich spent 8 years in college at UCLA to receive a bachelor’s degree in Physics and a master’s degree in meteorology. Later, he moved to the UW grad school to study avalanches and mountain weather. Fortunately, the research turned into the Northwest Avalanche and Mountain Weather Forecast Center(NWAC).
After his studies at UCLA, Marriott moved to the University of Washington for graduate work in Atmospheric Sciences, focusing on avalanches and mountain weather. This research culminated in the establishment of the Northwest Avalanche and Mountain Weather Forecast Center (NWAC), where he worked for 15 years, including 12 years as a forest service meteorologist.
Marriott’s work at NWAC involved providing detailed mountain weather and avalanche forecasts, conducting field research, and installing some of the first remote mountain weather stations in the Northwest. His expertise led him to work in the Mount St. Helens red zone during the 1980 eruption, providing avalanche hazard information to scientists.
In addition to his work at NWAC, Marriott spent summers as the Station manager for the Blue Glacier Research Project in the Olympic Mountains. This role involved maintaining a high-altitude research facility and conducting studies in glaciology, climatology, and meteorology.
Marriott’s transition to television weather forecasting came unexpectedly, at the suggestion of longtime Seattle weathercaster Harry Wappler. He began working weekends at KING 5 while still employed at NWAC, eventually moving to full-time morning broadcasts.
